We had a great week finishing up our genre on Opinion Writing this week. Everyone did an amazing job of writing an opinion and telling why they think or felt that way. Ask your child to tell you all about the Opinion piece they worked on this week.
We began our unit on Addition and Subtraction this week in Math. We are working on story problems with manipulatives this week. We are using cookie cereal, buttons, bears, and drawings to help us add and subtract. You can practice these at home as well with toys, snacks, cereal, coins, etc. Example: I have 3 Skittles. Mom gave me 2 more. How many Skittles do I have in all? You can also practice writing the equation or number sentence that goes with the problems (3+2=5).
We enjoyed learning about Earth Materials in class and exploring them in the Science Lab. Thank you to all the parents that volunteered! We will continue investigating rocks, soil, air, and water next week in Science too.
The class has really enjoyed reading different "Little Red Hen" stories this week. We focused on the characters, setting, problem, and solution of each story and discussed how they were alike and different (comparing similar stories). One of the skills that we are really working on in small group reading is retelling a story. Practice this at home while reading to or with your child.
We had a blast sorting and graphing Lucky Charms cereal that a leprechaun left for our class on St. Patrick's Day! We made a yummy "lucky potion" for our Fun Friday snack too. Thank you so much to Mrs. Chastain for helping us with it.
Themes for Next Week: Three Little Pig Stories, Story Elements, Guided Reading, Daily 5, Addition and Subtraction, Earth Materials
Popcorn Words: did, they, was
