We had such a great week reading many stories and discussing story elements. We read "The Mitten" by Jan Brett and enjoyed retelling the story in order and even acting the story out using masks and a "blanket" for the mitten.
We had a wonderful time discussing Black History this week too. We learned a Black History Poem and discussed many famous African Americans from actors, athletes, musicians, politicians, entertainers, scientists, artists, and authors. We focused on two amazing African American authors and illustrators, Faith Ringgold and Patricia McKissack.
We read "Tar Beach" by Faith Ringgold about a little girl, Cassie Louise, who flies over the George Washington Bridge so it will be hers and she gives us many reasons why it is her most prized possession. Ask your child what he/she chose to fly over and write about this week.
We also read "Flossie and the Fox" by Patricia McKissack. We discussed story elements like characters, setting, problem and solution, and retold the story from beginning, middle, and end. We also made a Fun Friday snack with Mrs. Pearson and Mrs. Ritter today. We made Flossie's basket full of eggs and they were really yummy! Thank you so much for helping us with this tasty treat.
We had a blast learning about Comparing Numbers and Greater Than, Less Than, and Equal To this week. We learned a new song called "The Number Eating Alligator" and played some great games to help us understand this standard.
We also read the book, "The Snowy Day" and discussed story elements during Daily 5 Rounds. We continued with Guided Reading and Read to Self too.
I really enjoyed seeing many of you at Leap Into Learning on Thursday night and hope you enjoyed getting to explore our new iPad Minis! Meet the Experts was also amazing; we have so many talented students at Sweet Apple!
